The Appointment
George sat in his car waiting for 3 o'clock to finally arrive. The air
conditioner was blowing as he listened to the radio. He had a meeting at
church with the minister of Education. He wondered why Charles had
asked him to meet. George had only been a member of Liberty Baptist
Church for a few months and was getting tired of always being asked to
participate in some new ministry. He let it slip one day that he was
interested in the youth group and before he knew it, brother Jimmy had
requested that he help out with youth functions.
He had to put a stop to this constant bombardment of church
participation. He understood that it was every member's job to work
towards the goals that God had setup. How could he consider himself a
Christian if he didn't participate in some of the church functions? The
time was almost there for his meeting with Charles and although he was
fully prepared to shoot Charles' request down, he felt a tug at his
heart that not trying to help out in church only drove him further away
from God. He couldn't go back to the life he once lived and not
participating in church was a sure way back to that miserable existence.
George popped in one of his more upbeat CDs and slid his seat back to take a quick nap. While he was resting, he imagined all of the time that would be taken away from his fishing and TV. He enjoyed church as much as the next guy, but thought that he had done about as much as one could be expected to do in his situation. He really wanted more recreation time and whatever Charles was about to ask him was going to cut that time down to nothing. What kind of excuse could George give Charles that would pass as an acceptable reason why he could not participate in whatever he had to offer?
Then when George thought he had convinced himself that not rocking the boat and keeping his schedule clear to do what he wanted was his final decision, God spoke to him and made him realize that he had been selfish. God had revealed that his thoughts about church and his attitude towards "doing more" was hurting his testimony and slowing his walk with Him.
George repented of his sins that afternoon and finally understood the meaning of Christian service as well as what the body of Christ meant with regards to his participation in church activities. Suddenly, he could hear another car approaching in the distance. George watched as Charles' car drove up closer in the driveway. Charles got out of his car and walked over to George. With a grin, George rolled down his window and greeted Charles. Charles looked at George and replied "Nice to see you today, Pastor George, are you ready for our weekly staff meeting". George replied in a more upbeat manner, "Yes, I will be there in a second".
